Play Arts Tomb Raider Lara CroftPlay Arts Tomb Raider Lara Croft

Hello MFCers! I realize I said I was going to finally post my Manyuu Chifusa review after repairing her sword, but I got a *little* preoccupied with the new Tomb Raider game, having finally finished it yesterday morning. As such, I think it's somewhat appropriate to review Square Enix's Play Arts Lara Croft from the new Tomb Raider collector's edition. I've been a big fan of the series since the Legends trilogy (I don't really care for the original games) and I was really looking forward to both the new game and this figure.

Packaging:

This is sort of a tricky area. Is the packing the entire collector's case or is it just the container holding the figure? To cover both grounds, I'll begin with the game case. For those that have not seen it, the collector's edition comes in a large tin case with a cardboard slip cover over top. The slip case features a close up imagine of the standard game cover. Lara is shown from the waist up in the middle of a rain storm. She is injured and holding her left arm. She is covered in blood and dirt, but still has a fighting spirit in her eyes. The tin case inside it is designed to looked like a weathered survival kit. It has scratches and rust (not textured) on the front and four sides. The back and interior however don't feature any graphics or paint. The lid has "SURVIVAL KIT" and the Endurance logo on it, as well as a raised crest with the climbing ax Lara uses on it. The tin case's lid is attached with hinges on the left side.

The figure is kept in a clear plastic clam shell beneath the card board tray that holds the game, inside the tin. Her accessories are kept in two sectional, non resealable plastic bags that are taped to the back of the clam shell. While the packing for the figure is about what I expected, this is obviously not a figure that you'll be displaying in the package. I wish that the plastic bags that contain the accessories were resealable. Instead, I'll have to worry about losing pieces or having them slide around if I choose not to display Lara.

Sculpt:

Lara's sculpt appears to be based on her appearance in the multiplayer section of the game / concept artwork due to the particular bandages, low dirt level on herself and clothing, and the lack of her abdominal wound. I'm not sure why Square Enix went with this particular version of Lara; I assume they were simply working off of the concept artwork for the game. Her facial proportions are captured quite well and match up to her in game model. The hair is sculpted to show the individual strands and locks and looks very good. The necklace and pendent around Lara's neck are sculpted instead of just painted on, as are the individual bandages wrapped around her body. The body sculpt includes fine detail such as folds in the clothing, clothing texture, and some body detailing where her clothes are tight against her. Her pants have some rips sculpted in to them.

Lara's shoulder strap is a separate piece that is only physically attached to her upper back. The strap includes a holster for her shotgun. Her hip holster, for her handgun, is also a separate piece, attached to everywhere the belts touch except for the right hip and upper right thigh.

Paint:

Like my male John Shepard and some of the other Play Arts figures that I've seen, the paint brings Lara down a little. The first thing that jumped out at me was that the joints for her elbows and wrists are not painted. The are a light tan color. While it's closer in color to Lara's skin than say green, it still takes away from the overall quality of the figure. The second that that I noticed is that the bandage on Lara's left arms isn't completed painted. While it annoys me, it appears to simply be a quality control issue as my friend's Lara is completely painted. Additionally, my Lara's left eye is painted slightly off center. While it's not bad enough to make her look "derby," it is noticeable up close while viewing her at certain angles.

Articulation:

http://i.imgur.com/XBfkM7yl.jpg

Like other Play Arts figures, Lara has decent articulation. She has a ball joint at the top of her neck where it inserts into the head. The head has a good range of movement looking up, tilting to either side, or looking left or right. The head can only slightly tilt downwards, which does limit some posing options. The long locks of hair tucked behind her ears are made up of a soft plastic, so it doesn't interfere with her head's possibility. Speaking of her hair, Her ponytail utilizes a swivel joint allowing for a wind swept look...or simply moving the hair out of the way for her accessories.

Moving down, she has ball jointed shoulders that plug into swivel shoulders blades. The shoulder blades barely move, but the ball jointed shoulders work well. Each elbow utilizes a ball joint, but can only move front to back and not side to side. The end result are elbow joints that have the approximate range of pin joints. The wrist use ball joints with a full range of movement.

Lara has a ball jointed upper torso and waist. The upper torso joint is right below her breasts and has a great range of movement. Because her shoulder strap is only attached to her upper back, it doesn't interfere with the articulation what so ever. Unfortunately, the waist joint doesn't fair as well. Because the holster is attached to everything but the right hip and upper right thigh, the joint is basically useless.

Lara's hips use ball joints and have a great range when moving side to side. Unfortunately, Her legs have little range forward and backward. Moving down, she has double pin joint knees. While they allow for a great range of movement, it's wasted due to the lack of swivel thighs and the limited range of the hip joints. Finally, Lara has ball jointed ankles and a swivel joint along the center of each foot. Once again, the joints only do so much due to the joints above.

Accessories:

http://i.imgur.com/SNnDeAEl.jpg

Lara comes with decent amount of accessories. To start with, she has a total of five hands: a pair of trigger finger hands, a pairs of loose gripping hands specifically to hold the climbing ax, and a lose right hand.

In addition, Lara comes with a handgun, shotgun, bow, arrow, and a climbing ax. Each of these accessories is a single sculpted piece. Their appearance seems to taken directly from the concept artwork for the game. As mentioned above, both the handgun and shotgun fit inside Lara's holsters.

http://i.imgur.com/x277TALl.jpg

The fact that the bow and its string are a single piece is pretty disappointing. Because of this, Lara can't be posed with the bow being drawn. The best thing I could come with was to have Lara hold the arrow against the bow, preparing to draw it. The arrow is nicely sculpted, but Lara doesn't have a hand that holds it very well, nor a quiver to place it in.

The climbing ax has a detailed sculpt and is well painted. Lara's looser gripping hands are designed to hold it, but the ax still doesn't sit as tight in her hands as I would like. As long has you have it wedged in her grip tightly, it shouldn't fall out of her hands. The only odd thing about the climbing ax is that it can't be hung on Lara's belt.

Value:

The collector's edition came with not just the game and Lara, but a bunch of other goodies including a map, sound track, lithograph, and DLC codes. Considering that I got all of this for just an extra $40, I'm quite happy. Others may view the value in a different light than I do.

Overall Score:

Lara's a solid figure and she continues to grow on me. Fans of the new Tomb Raider will probably really like her. For those who are not big fans of the Play Arts figures, she won't change your minds, but you might be surprised by her.

A while back I saw this figure but I wasn't a fan of the face. That's what makes or breaks a figure for me. If it looked more like Lara in the game, I'd have bought it. They should've included a relic. lol The climbing axe looks shockingly accurate. That's amazing. Oh and does the bow actually work? Like does it stretch?
Omgomgomg Wasn't the game rediculous?! At some points I would just marvel at how Lara would look in the shadows of the night- moon drawing all kinds of images on her body through the foilage of the trees as she slithered through the calm of the night. 8D

Oh my, haha. The game was indeed awesome. I wish they scrapped the multiplayer and had a few more tombs, perhaps larger ones, but I'm quite happy with the game overall. It was certainly interesting to go from a thrill seeking, death trap loving, unstoppable Lara in the Legends trilogy to a constantly getting beat up, gradually becoming invincible Lara. I felt pretty over powered by the end, but it worked with the tone of the game. I must say though, this is the first game that I've ever played as a female and felt truly threatened by a male character (I don't want to add spoilers, but I imagine you know the scene I mean).

As for the bow, it's a single sculpted piece with almost no give. It bends just enough for Lara to wear, but that's it. I found that she looks better wearing it rather than holding it.

Raithos (6 l. temu) #1420593The game was actually really good. I wish a scaled company would attack figs like this. We could get some impressive video game characters if that happened. Still, a nice figure and nice extensive review. I don't like her face though, seems a bit off, lol. I like the "survival case" though, nice little touch. They were all about survivability in this game that's for sure

I can't but wonder: did you sit on a wardrobe or something to take pictures of her? Your camera angle is so close to the ceiling :3

lol. I actually had Lara standing on top of my entertainment unit. It's one of the few areas in my house where the lighting isn't terrible.
