Today we're going to make the Odangoya san - Japanese cakes DIY kit! This is a candy-flavored set to make your own mini traditional Japanese cakes. Originally this kit was part of my recent Japanese snacks, drink and candy loot: BLOG #45603 .

Packaging

https://i.ibb.co/0C2k3SK/IMG-4515.jpg

The colorful packaging shows which cakes you are going to make and mentions you only need to add water yourself.

https://i.ibb.co/5RscNRg/IMG-4516.jpg

The back of the packaging shows all the instructions and the basics can be understand even if you don't know much (or any Japanese). However, for some more complicated steps it was good to grab Google Translate.

Instructions part 1.

Instructions continued.

The contents

https://i.ibb.co/6wQ2Mv7/IMG-4519.jpg

This kit comes with quite a lot of pieces!

https://i.ibb.co/71y8xvw/IMG-4520.jpg

All the mixing and molding trays, a plastic spoon and a plastic bag.

https://i.ibb.co/Fgyz6yP/IMG-4521.jpg

All the powders for the set. It's important to note that the smell was extremely sweet even when keeping distance from the bags. I had a feeling this was going to become a repeat of my Popin' Cookin' Sushi Set BLOG #18923 kit...

Making the kit

First up: Mixing the red bean paste!

https://i.ibb.co/n1KsWHF/IMG-4523.jpg

The see-through jello had an interesting method on how to make it. You first had to fill the bag with the powder...

https://i.ibb.co/fMrhQ5V/IMG-4524.jpg

...then you had to measure the water...

https://i.ibb.co/j4DKNCj/IMG-4525.jpg

...then you had to put it together in the bag and shake shake shake!

I have absolutely no clue why the shaking was needed here instead of stirring as with every other set I have made. Maybe just because it's fun for kids?

https://i.ibb.co/6WcwDVP/IMG-4526.jpg

Putting the jello in the molds.

https://i.ibb.co/sW8Fpjr/IMG-4527.jpg

Red bean paste 'filling' for the taiyaki-shaped dessert (?).

https://i.ibb.co/JRwDqtV/IMG-4528.jpg

Making the strawberry!

https://i.ibb.co/xJsGhNf/IMG-4529.jpg

Into the strawberry shapes.

https://i.ibb.co/dWD5JWb/IMG-4530.jpg

Making the 'leaf'.

https://i.ibb.co/5FYHkdq/IMG-4531.jpg

And pressed into it's shape as well!

https://i.ibb.co/4p3Bqd2/IMG-4532.jpg

Now it was time to make the rice!

https://i.ibb.co/hgHM6XR/IMG-4533.jpg

The instructions mentioned to make 3 big and 3 small round balls.

Assembly

The curled up cake: The parts were already sticking together when I realized I should have switched the green and white parts.

https://i.ibb.co/BTF2Jqy/IMG-4536.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/93T54V8/IMG-4515-Copy-2.jpg

Strawberry on top of rice cake: There was an attempt.

https://i.ibb.co/vkjmJdB/IMG-4537.jpg

https://i.ibb.co/hdSGsSM/IMG-4538.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/YLmdrmf/IMG-4515-Copy-3.jpg

The jello-pile with rice, bean paste and strawberries: Better than I expected!

https://i.ibb.co/99wbw5L/IMG-4539.jpg

https://i.ibb.co/5B7m33H/IMG-4540.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/6NS5cJB/IMG-4515-Copy-4.jpg

Leaf-covered rice ball with bean paste: Well, there is a leaf pattern if you look closely...

https://i.ibb.co/n7tJs4p/IMG-4542.jpg

There it is, the whole set!

Wait...you are saying we are missing one? Uhm...

https://i.ibb.co/qnmY1vk/IMG-4543.jpghttps://i.ibb.co/x2B3KTt/IMG-4515-Copy-5.jpg

Kill...me...

It was impossible to keep this one together as one piece. I wonder if I should have waited longer for the jello to set? On the other hand the hot summer weather back when I made this kit didn't help much either.

End result

https://i.ibb.co/KySn71P/IMG-4544.jpg

There we have it! The full finished set, it was time to taste!

The taste

Let me just re-use my joke from 5+ years ago to describe the taste...

https://i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/685/864/249.jpg

It was overly overly sweet. Furthermore the textures were either very jelly or very chewy.

Flavor breakdown:

Red bean paste = Actually tasted like red bean paste, but a lot more sweet and flour-y
Transparent jello = Lemon
Strawberry = Artificial strawberry flavor
Green parts = Matcha flavor, actually the best flavor from the set!
Rice = Tasteless. I didn't taste anything, not even sugar. Very weird.

Recommendable?

Overall, the kit was fun to make, but as the sculpting/assembling part is pretty complicated and the taste is not great either, I would rather point people to other DIY kits I've made before. A random selection of them you can find here: users.v4.php?cu... .

Finish

And as promised, for every new blog, I will fix up an older blog. This time I decided to fix up another food blog:
Popin' Cookin' - Taiyaki Odango Mochi Wagashi Kit Japanse DIY: BLOG #42318

Thanks for reading my blog! My next blog will be a loot blog again. Hope to see you there!

chachachow29 d. temu#80438751This is so cute! It reminds me of this channel I follow on YouTube that goes through the preparation of Poppin' Cookin' kits (and other miniatures, I think, like Re-ment). So soothing and adorable.
Naturally, much more difficult to do as a regular person, ha... Like trying out a Pinterest project for the first time www
This was super fun to read and I would love to see more of this! Even if the final result isn't that tasty www

Hehe, I've been compared to that channel before, but the person doing that is in general way better at getting displayable results, haah!

Although I've been making these kits for quite some years, I can't really say there is much improvement, I think it is because in general I only get about 2-3 kits a year and then I make all of them in one go, and have a long break before I pick up the next one. You need to keep on doing it regularly and make the same kit multiple times before you'll be good.

I'll have another one of these up next week! And a selection of previous ones I made is here: users.v4.php?cu... ! :)

galablue1 mies. temu#80403643Haha I'm sorry but this stuff does not look appetizing XD sure looks fun though!

Haha, if I managed to recreate the look on the packaging more, it would have been appetizing. xD

tsukky_1 mies. temu#80403829I haven't made any DIY Japanese sweet because of laziness. I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I look forward for more :D

I plan to have another one of these blogs up next week! :)

LittlePisces1 mies. temu#80403867You actually read my mind when I was thinking about those green Kit Kats! Maybe I can request my mom when she goes to the Asian store again that's 2 hours away. Or I can just buy them online.

It's a good introduction to matcha because of the white chocolate making it less bitter. :) Let me know what you think of them once you would try them! ^^

Maakie1 mies. temu#80402337I was so surprised about the rice not having any flavor that I am curious if it's some kind of flavor my taste buds can't pick up, or that it lost flavor somewhere during the transportation process...
Oh! Matcha is good! My favorite is matcha Kit Kat! You should try it if you find it for sale somewhere near you. :)

lesser-robot-cat1 mies. temu#80370603It looks like it was fun to make, though! I haven't tried that one before.

For sure! I never buy these sets for the taste, it's about the building-fun and trying out new kinds. :) If it has a nice flavor, that's a bonus.

victorviper1 mies. temu#80370935At least the red bean paste actually tasted like red bean.

True. I was fully expecting it to taste like artificial chocolate.

LittlePisces1 mies. temu#80370988Such a shame the rice doesn't have a taste. Nice to hear you at least liked the matcha flavored stuff. To tell the truth. I never tasted matcha before. ^_^'
