Hello MFC, long time no post!

I just felt like rambling on for a moment, so do feel to skip over this while I try and make sense of the last few months of my life and how it relates to figure collecting.

I've decided to thin out my collection and list a huge chunk of it for sale. This comes off the back of some very difficult things happening in my life; decisions that I have to make that I really don't want to. I feel I've lost control of everything, and this is one way of grounding myself and finding some form of control again, I guess.

I want to focus almost solely on Miku figures from now on with a few exceptions that I can't bear to let go of... and while listing these figures for sale has been difficult (because I do love them), it has also been very cathartic. I feel like I'm really decluttering, "trimming the fat", taking control of the wheel, airing out a musty old room, so to speak. I suddenly want to collect again - I've ordered three Mikus this week where I haven't ordered anything for months!

I will miss some of the figures very, very much. But I think recognizing that I can still see pictures of them online is a good step. I don't need to own them to appreciate them, necessarily. And I'm excited to be dedicating my shelves to more Miku ♥

That being said, I'm really hoping I can... actually shift the ones I have decided to part with;;

Have you guys ever decided to sell off a big portion of your collection? How did it go? How did you feel doing it?

Tastes change over time, it's normal, collect what you want/like, cheers!

I had to do the same! I ran out of space on my bookcases (I live at home so I can't branch out). So far I haven't had to sell any of my figures, but I did have to sell my 89 volume monthly shonen jump collection that I'd been collecting since middle school. They had a ton of sentimental value to me so I ended up keeping the 3 volumes that I would always reread, and let go of the rest.

The lack of shelf space did mean that I've pretty much reduced myself to only actively collecting Persona 3 and Super Sonico/Pochaco figures. I still have all of my previous ones from other collections (A whole mishmash of series) and I feel like if I have to sell any to collect new figures the random ones will be first to go.

It took some time but I've also bit the bullet and decided to sell off most of my collection. After heavily reflecting on my purchasing habits and how I view happiness and materialism I realized that I'd much rather have my money go towards experiences rather than things. I am keeping some select items but most of them are being sold off if not already sold. It's quite nice knowing those items will be/have made someone else happy as well helping cover some expenses on my end. I think trimming my collection down to a select handful of favorites will help me appreciate them more since they're not drowned out by a bunch of other stuff. I've seen this mentioned in the comments but the whole idea of "if my house burnt down, what will I really be distraught over losing" helps a lot with deciding whether or not to get rid of something. Good luck with your collection!

not exactly downsizing but I am faced with quite an impossible choice recently and have just put a whole set of figures to sell in order to raise funds / make space for figures from newer series.

I am quite conflicted at the point of writing this post since this set of figures is what I wanted ever since I started collecting and just managed to complete the whole set few months back. But then again, as compared to all my other figures, it seems more "easier" to part with them...

Wonder how it will goes in the end..... >.<"

Congratulations on discovering your love for a specific collection theme! Thinning out the old pieces is kind of like pruning a bonsai, isn't it? You're worried at first, but it'll be beautiful after it's done. With a character as iconic as Miku, you'll have plenty of new figures to add to your collection along the way.

Selling older pieces, huh? Mine, erm, are not in mind condition after they go through my hands. (Funny how a little paint and epoxy can do that.)

I've pondered the idea of selling certain portions of my collection and just downsizing, but I don't think I could ever do it. Putting that plan into motion would just be a nightmare for me. Props to you for being able to appricate seeing the figures online, because I don't think I could do the same. There's just a beauty to behold when having them in person that online photos could never do. Even more so with bringing myself to sell what I own. An selling this stuff, would cause me to have second thoughts.

You're completely right with the positives on downsizing. I know it would greatly benefit me if I did downsize. That's more cash in my pockets to dump into other things that'll benefit me down the line (basically being more responsible). However, there's a part of me that just can't do it. I don't mind entertaining the idea, but I don't think I could ever part with any portion of my stuff.
That's my spill of things, Hope everything goes well for you

It can be hard to get rid of figures but in the long run it feels so nice to have a collection of things you know you truly enjoy!

When I started figure collecting, I went only for Hunter x Hunter merch. Now after some personal things happen and a loss of interest for the series, I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. I packed away all HxH stuff last year and never looked back. I recently sold just about everything Hunter x Hunter that I own and I feel so much better. I'm much happier with my collection and appreciate it more!

I haven't yet but I have plans to, hopefully this year. Things change so much and I'm sure things will continue to change, but I'm at a point where I know what I love. I've fallen out of love with some things, so while I will continue to buy things, I'm trying to make sure what I buy is something I want to carry with me for a long while.

Sorry to hear you have been having a hard time and I hope all goes well in relation to that. As for selling figures I have done that quite a lot, honestly I lost a little money but I dont regret the hobby or anything like that. I think its okay to have tastes change or if something comes up just to part with figures. As for me I sold about 40 figures or so, and my main focus now is really only to get figures I love (not just like). I am also trying to pre-order less in general, I feel like the "hype" of some figures really gets to me. I am reasonably happy with my collection as of right now and will only get more figures every once in a while. Also I hope you are able to enjoy all your Miku figures too, seeing my own cute Mikus when I get back home cheers me up too!

As I got older I realized I don't have the time, energy, or money to curate a collection like I could when I was younger. Nowadays I only have about 5 figures on display. Having to think about moving house with the whole collection is also a nightmare.

Makes you think about what you would miss if the house burnt down. Figures would not be the worry. They used to be one of the things - but not anymore.

Makes me wish I never got into the hobby though I know I would've thrown all my money at something else lol

Godspeed with selling your collection. It's a bit of a time sink, but once you get a little bit more space back to you, it feels very nice in itself.
