! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

This review has spoilers (if you can call them that?) for the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale.

Welcome to my review! Today I will be talking about a figure set of Akazukin/Little Red Riding Hood ENTRY #34276 , based on the fairy tale with the same name ENTRY #13491 ! This figure set is titled POP Wonderland #2 Little Red Riding Hood ENCYCLOPEDIA #25822 and is made by System Service ENTRY #7900 . It consists of 5 pieces:
#1: Little Red Riding Hood leaving for her grandmothers' house ITEM #22577
#2: Little Red Riding Hood straying a bit of the path ITEM #22578
#3: Little Red Riding Hood picking flowers ITEM #22579
#4: Little Red Riding Hood being scared by 'grandmother' ITEM #22580
#5: Little Red Riding Hood after defeating the Big Bad Wolf ITEM #22581

In this review I will reference a lot to my earlier review of the Thumbelina set ENCYCLOPEDIA #25821 and will compare the two when it comes to quality and scores. That's why I recommend reading the Thumbelina review BLOG #40142 first before getting to this one!

I will start off with telling some more about her background.

Background

Little Red Riding Hood is an European folk tale, that got it's written-down fairy tale versions by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. It is about a little girl that goes on a journey to bring her sick grandmother food, but as most people probably know, the road to grandmother (and grandmother herself) are quite dangerous! Famous character designer and artist POP ENTRY #8335 made a series of illustrated children's books telling famous fairytales, called POP Wonderland. Little Red Riding Hood is one of those books and this trading figure set is based of illustrations from that book.

The reason why and how I got her

I bought this figure set at the same time as the Thumbelina set. I got them as I am a huge fan and collector of the artist. The set was advertised as new and sealed and I bought them for a similar price as the Thumbelina one, around 2,5K yen (excluding proxy fees) for the full set.

Just as with Thumbelina, these trading figures are modelled after specific pages of the book. The artstyle of POP is captured in the cute proportions and eye style of these figures, but their color is a lot more bright instead of the lighter shading POP is known for in his artwork.

Just as with my Thumbelina, the seller packaged all pieces of all figures in one big bag. I haven't found proof of it (yet), but it's highly likely these figures are originally gashapon, meaning they were distributed in plastic (semi)clear balls and don't have any type of box.

When I took apart the big plastic bag, I was happy to see that these already had their stickers attached! Considering these figures were listed as new, I wonder if this set had all stickers pre-attached or that this set wasn't 'new' at all. I'm thinking the latter, but oh well, it seems like the last owner took good care of them!

Even though assembly work here was easier with all the stickers already being attached, I spend quite some time on puzzling, as a lot more pieces here looked similar than in the Thumbelina set!

Aaaaaaargh! One of my Little Red Riding Hood is missing her legggss! Are you kidding me?! To make things even worse, shortly after making this picture I accidentally dropped her and lost the bottle of wine that is supposed to be in her basket. Up until this day, I still have not found this 1CM sized bottle of wine...

Anyway, I decided to keep these parts of the figure (to have an spare basket, face or backdrop is nice), but I am still really annoyed by this. Considering I was already photographing for this review, I'll continue this review with the other 4, but hope to pick up a loose one of the missing #2 soon (which I then will add later to this review).

Just as with the Thumbelina-books, the outside of these books is the same with all of them. What I specifically like about the one from the Little Red Riding Hood set is that the color of the bottom of the base matches with the book.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rkVV1qGoX5C3mXYbGTqJo8Jp7G7EvJTXQQ0O4KqfwH19QFqCPFivWqxfnI2BGfHwmFuZtaM7w43N9O5YZ6j4gwahAAt3h2XFu3DRaFEs_qA3tbkiYX0BVRkp-eA4yjdL4AM72yP0mwjG6d9vLDo1PMoWFydLBuPoxG57pSCE7KhHuOTqhCSFPFqqV06CXv8lMKkX--mrnzOTr4xuZZj30ET_FRg7J1LokmCVQc4Qzl98_JKrJXitHbt-JCROR7aFKDOwBfS11xpZ-3qlEetHF-kbVoMW_xFc57yCdIuZ0dzFe0zELz44JSwQhRYk2AHHXSCDZLr1t4QnEjNik5sj0nZQLNoId8MvwU6tHB5TcYQHFUlZJU4NCTTA6kpnsFIVV75CEcQiGPx7VX8be7jVBSrTBVnWwJxrrRRy_KWSEMyPFanKmYz0k2WfhE-edg7L9Jr5yMNIdrbouB6AxsGQ6Jpn5_m520ch0YERdXpKCeYKWd6LLLJDZo4PrS9UzHdGtxinXpI5F_e92tpHJHG3us4gDEwCnY_j6iAlVgsw9cLSvIq6UJQhRXOn6tZ36mQMmBuXI5ff-CcS_1JsITPtBAh7Z_QxJjvNQCSQM7k=w1007-h966-no?.jpg

Another difference with Thumbelina is that the 'PW' (standing for Pop Wonderland) is a decal here, instead of a sticker as with Thumbelina:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DoILxqcPP7KQ9r1yvyFLkLvV0DCMZwA4hTzQqFpjjl5Ax3-_3k78w-WfIQDpJ6eTLHisx6lifaDJJZcRUitcpz1C8ol4DCc6h4kbKaYe0pc7l_B7KXwKpocw062n99Atv7PRg32hGwdvtX1hMbxzSF5xGcWpNrnXuwJ0LYlQui6Few-ttCIQJDvEdnt4ZkSh25jLgIuw7x9QyNl58l6auvLWe0Q70QV9x3b6xzKQ0nfFELc49usg5Yq26nLUr5iuCWWgew3t6E7JEk7adXIVKUC6bWSbgSrCCeY0ypzwl7oxj11UcHWNwXbixudSLmzOVGRRp0dTeh57JFH-DOXPAhYXnkg47LcNZh_uaI3poutmCm7xgA49mPF0rnIvCuv87lb3iHch26WplW2GvlmNDA6HW7DNtH5FlDjD1jVASA3XTSMJb5lfzWa_bSjax-yeObhD3xZMjGBuXkbtJhW31LPX-0aXAk9LREKSSlxWGIJY_-f5a9DHP-d0PMg0EgCflEq2Q7VPCbIUwWz8Z_c9YPAypU_s-M5nhXYlbIMIz-l6PIfU8vzEuhoEyrT6JUDYuKcJxy1VghqyLyF6sRU2OvbC05uw59xmFB8Q1pg=w1288-h966-no?.jpg

Above is the book from Thumbelina for reference. The lettering on the sticker is a lot brighter, but I really prefer the decal for a more 'old timey book' look.

After looking at this picture I only realized that I stickered the book the other way around! I put the title name of the book on the right cover, thinking about it being a Japanese book reading from right to left. Instead, it seemed that they thought at System Service, that it should be the other way around considering the origin of these fairy tales. Or it was just done coincidentally by the manufacturer and I'm overthinking it.

The first figure is of the scene where Little Red Riding Hood waves her mother goodbye and leaves for her grandmother. The background is a brighter colored version of the book image.

When the figure is placed on the base, her placement with waving to her mom is a bit off, but the overall same mood is set.

The figure has bright colored paints that are neatly applied, but have no details in shading. It's especially nice to see such good paint on small parts such as the buckles on her shoes. The only bit of shading is in Little Red's hair.

This figure pictures the scene where Little Red Riding Hood is picking flowers because of the Big Bad Wolf distracting her to do so. With Little Red distracted, the Big Bad Wolf is on his way to Grandmothers' house.

Because of the posing, this figure can easily sit by herself. The scene is very cute and I appreciate the details in sculpt in the log and the wrinkles in her skirt.

Her face is also very adorable on this figure. The expressions are definitely better translated to 3D here than on most of Thumbelina's figures!

This is the closest you will get to a pantyshot of this figure set is this. Little Red is wearing white tights that go up all the way. Nothing lewd here, just more cuteness for this character, I find it very charming.

The fourth figure of this set is a big change compared to the tone of the others: It's the confrontation with the Big Bad Wolf!

Her shocked expression is a bit strange at first, but considering the size of this figure, it's quite nice to still capture such an emotion. Also here this exaggerated expression is better looking than what we have seen on Thumbelina's figures.

Just like with Thumbelina, these figures can be put with their backs to eachother to form a display-circle telling the story! In my case, because of one missing, there are small gaps inbetween the figures. Actually I'm surprised that it's not that noticeable there is a missing one looking at them together like this. Figure #2 is probably also the least worst one to miss from this set, considering you don't have a huge gap in the story without it.

The Points

Positive
- Cute set that tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood well in just a few figures.
- Nice sculpt and paint for their price and age.

Neutral
- POP's style is not completely captured in the figures.

Negative
- Figures and scenes look a bit too similar to eachother (especially compared to the other POP Wonderland sets).

The Scores

Sculpting 8/10
Very nice sculpt for the age and price of these figures. I especially like her open-mouth expressions.

Painting 8/10
For such small figures, it's very neatly painted. A little bit of shading was used in the hair.

Posing 8/10
Although maybe a bit too similar here and there, it tells the story of Little Red Riding hood very well and simple.

Base 9/10
Adorable bases giving nice display options.

Assembly 7/10
Keeping in mind you probably need to sticker all of them if you buy a new set, it's quite a lot of work to assemble them. With this specific set some parts look very similar, which makes them a bit hard to identify.

Enjoyment 7/10
Because of my rage when finding out I had an incomplete one, my enjoyment was a lot lower. Still, I think this set is more enjoyable than the Thumbelina one, but that could also mainly be because I have more childhood memories to this specific fairy tale.

Conclusion

Just as with Thumbelina, if you are a fan of POP's artworks and/or fairy tales in general, this set is really recommendable. Incredibly cute to display as a set and quite affordable for what you get.

Availability

They seem a bit more rare than the Thumbelina set, but also average for 2,5K yen for a full set. They aren't easily available, so you probably need to wait a bit before a full set shows up on Yahoo! Japan Auctions or Suruga-Ya.

And to finish it!

I have these cuties displayed together with the Thumbelina set!

My plan is to buy the last missing set from my collection, the Alice in Wonderland one ENTRY #25820 and display those on top. That way the 5-4-5 display of the figures will probably look very nice! I still want to pick up an extra Little Red #2, but I assume it will take a while before I find it for sale. The rest of this shelf I will fill with some other more randomized POP figures, such as ITEM #1024 , ITEM #5600 and ITEM #54257 .

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about a Yu-Gi-Oh! figure again, this time Kotobukiya's Kaiba Seto ITEM #91371 .

Heldrik (11 d. temu) #35639221I was already intrigued by your Thumbelina figures, but seeing that Little Red Riding Hood set made me look for info about the artist. Good Lord, is that drawstyle sweet and cute, I may have to call Wilford Brimley because of all the diabetes it gave me.

Anyway, even with a missing part, that's still a really nice set, as shown on your photo. As for the figure that's half the girl it used to be, the black and white photo totally looks like it could have a combination of this or any record scratch sound effect playing in the background before Sound of Silence begins to play.

Don't get me started on POP's artworks. xD I'm a huge collector of figures styled after their works and collect their artbooks and doujinshi. :) My next loot blog I will post will also have a few of their doujinshi I recently picked up, if you also want to see some of their more niche work. :)

Haha. *record scratch* You probably wonder why I was found without legs, let me tell you a story...

BVibes (11 d. temu) #35613842I missed that somehow, it looks cool! But yea I can see it might be impractical.

Oh with the new layout and videos being tiny, I am more surprised if someone does see the video lol. Anyway, you would need to have a pretty small (handmade to perfect size for this set?) rotating base and even then I wouldn't know how to display them the best! But it's cool to see them rotate for a while and in a video like that. :) That makes me think I should probably make gifs of all the video-parts for my reviews for them to be more easy ti spot, hrmm. I think I will make a poll for that with my next blog. :)

Yeah, these are very neat! There is also a video inserted with the review where you can see them on a rotating base. Although it looks nice for a video, it's quite impractical to display them like that. ;)
Glad you enjoyed the review!

Rajke (11 d. temu) #35612381Nice and cute set. The last one has some humor.

The quality is not bad for figures this age. I hope you find the missing part for Legless Little Red.
Great review.

Haha, I never thought of it like that! It's almost like she's posing for a picture indeed. xD

For the age/price, these are very decent! And well, this set was sold to me without legs, so I will have to rebuy this figure... TT^TT

Thanks for liking the review!

BVibes (11 d. temu) #35612494Another cool set! I like how you display them. I wonder how they would look on auto-rotating bases too, if you displayed them like your photos where they touch.
Thanks for the review! :D

AppleNapoleon (11 d. temu) #35605479I'd happily take either set - blue would match my already owned POP Alice figures, but the pink would make an interesting contrast!
I don't comment often but I really enjoy all your reviews - thanks for posting them!

Aww, so sweet! Thank you! :D And I hope you acquire the Alice set soon! :)

solluxcaptor (11 d. temu) #35606079So adorable! Nice review :D

Thanks! :D Which one do you prefer, this one or Thumbelina? :)

Stacycmc (11 d. temu) #35608225Hahaa...some more little cuties!! These little figures are so precious! Thanks for sharing these with us as well! :D
...OH, and I love you're classic murder scene (her corpse missing it's legs) and the fade in of the "hello darkness my old friend" music. LOL...cracked me up!

Thank you for liking the review! :)

And I'm glad that got some chuckles out of people. xD
