! There is a wall of text in the beginning! If you want to see the figure + pictures and not the background information, you can scroll down a bit. ;) !

The pantyshot in this review has been put in spoiler, so this is a sfw review!

Welcome to my review! It's been a while MFC (life has been so busy!), but I hope to pick up reviewing more actively again, and I hope you enjoy! Today I will be talking about a figure of Atem ENTRY #21524 from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ENTRY #22169 ! This figure ITEM #450031 is made by Kotobukiya ENCYCLOPEDIA #7621 .

I will start off with telling some more about his background.

Background

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a manga series created by Kazuki Takahashi. It tells the story of the young boy Yuugi Mutou who lives together with his grandfather that owns a game shop. From a young age Yuugi has always been playing games by himself, since he gets bullied a lot at school. One day he solves an puzzle that turns out to be an ancient artifact from Egypt! The artifact, called the Sennnen (Millenium) Puzzle, gives him a wish. Yuugi being a lonely boy, wishes that he would get friends. The artifact makes his wish come true, but in exchange a spirit can take over his body whenever he wants! This spirit is called "the other Yuugi" or "the dark side of Yuugi" and is the complete opposite from the Yuugi that has solved the puzzle. The other Yuugi loves to play Shadow Games, which makes the losing player in the game lose something that is very important to them... Later on in the series, Yuugi gets on better terms with the spirit inside him and they can talk together or change the host of the body at will.

The original series (manga 1-7 and the first televion anime) is about a lot of different games, mainly played as "Shadow Games" by "the other Yuugi". The second adaption of the series (manga volume 8 and further and the anime called Duel Monsters) almost completely focusses on an extended version of the cardgame that gets introduced in the beginning of the series.

Atem is a very important character for the 'Egyptian Arc' of the series, which is season 5 of the anime. Explaining too much about him is a really big spoiler especially in his relationship to the other characters. Pokaż zawartość spoileraUkryj zawartość spoileraTo explain it short and simple with spoiler: Yami Yuugi/'the other Yuugi' turns out to be an Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt called Atem. The whole 5th season of the anime (and multiple manga volumes) explains about everything that happened back then, the relationships between characters and how the Duel Monsters game came to be. It is an amazing series finale that explains a lot about all the characters and the silly card games they play, everything starts making sense here!

The reason why and how I got him

I have been a huge Yu-Gi-Oh!-fan from the first moment I saw Duel Monsters dubbed on local television. After only airing 2 seasons they stopped showing it here, making me interested in more! During that time I already started watching anime in Japanese, so I decided to also watch Duel Monsters in Japanese. Later on, I found out about the original series before Duel Monsters and watched that also, and I ended up really liking the originality in all the Shadow Games that were made. During my teens I collected quite some "toys" that were sold locally from Yu-Gi-Oh. When they announced the trading figures and the first scaleds in the One Coin Grande and ARTFX J line from Kotobukiya in 2011, I was so amazed and happy! I never expected a series I loved to get figures after the airing stopped 6-7 years ago! As excited as I was I decided for myself to pre-order all the items they were making from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. We are now 7 years and many figures later and I love what Kotobukiya is doing for this franchise!

The release and anncouncement of this figure was not bundled with any official artwork, but some more recent artwork used on items made by Cospa ENTRY #7704 show very similar posing. The rest of his looks however, are a combination of his original manga design and the Duel Monsters anime design, rather than the newer Yu-Gi-Oh! style as seen in the most recent movie.

Video

I would normally tell people here to only look at the video if they prefer box shots, first look and first shots in that way...but with this figure I really recommend everyone to get a look at the video! The reason for that is that this figure has an incredibly beautiful golden paint, which shimmer really can't be captured by non-moving pictures. Kotobukiya is using a different golden paint/effect compared to earlier releases in this line where the characters are wearing golden items, such as Malik ITEM #166660 / BLOG #17970 and Yami Malik ITEM #119377 / BLOG #16783 .

I'll ramble some more about the beautiful gold later in this review.

All figures from the Yu-Gi-Oh! line from Kotobukiya come in a similar design box. I really like the glittering inside again, and the Millennium Puzzle windows are a nice touch.

The first impression that this figure gives is that he is very big (just like the others from this line) and all the shimmering gold keeps on being impressive!

Atem's clothing and jewellery look amazingly good. There is a lot of shading on the figure, especially at his back.

As a slight nitpick, you can see at the back that his necklace is attached with a peg to the neck. But let's rather appreciate at this point his amazing golden chains, where there is also shading to be seen in multiple gold gradients.

Atem comes with two left hands, where the 'main' left hand is the one that holds the cloak. This left hand has a clamped together pose. His bracelet looks nicely sculpted, although a bit simple in paint. Atem also wears two rings on his left hand, which have very small details for their size. Let's also take a moment to appreciate the sculpt of the hand here. The individual sculpt of the fingers is so nice!

Many Yu-Gi-Oh! fans were pleased to find out that Kotobukiya did not skip on the possibility to look under his skirt. There is a bulge and a little bit of his behind visible. The underwear itself seems like a very simplified version of actual ancient Egyptian underwear-cloths, but more tight fitting.

Atem is definitely more impressive if he wears his full cloak, even though I also really like how without the cloak, more of the attention goes to his jewellery.

As always, starting with the face. Atem has a very stern look, which fits very greatly with the posing of this figure. With the huge headpiece covering a big part of his face, it's actually quite interesting how low on detail this part is, if you think about it.

The headpiece is not very high on detail, but the design looks very slick. The same can be said about his collar. Atem wears two earrings in each ear, which show a higher detail. With all that jewellery going on, you would almost forget to check out his huge hairdo! The blond parts of his hair look really amazing, both in posing and shading. Especially the wefts at the front seem to be being blown to the side by the movement of his cape. The black/pink part of his hair is compared to it a lot more simple, but there is some nice shading from the back...

Going down from the hair, we go to one of the other main attractions: the cloak! I like how it bundles around the neck and shoulders.

The amount of muscles Yu-Gi-Oh! characters have, changes a lot inbetween chapters and animated episodes. Atem is known for having a bit of upper arm muscles, which is actually toned down a lot in this figure, although still visible. Atem wears a really nice piece of jewellery at his shoulder, although it has been a bit crudely attached with a visible peg to the figure.

In this shot you can see the strange shoulderpiece-peg a bit more. It also brings us to getting a look at the top of his dress and the belt. The top of his dress has been sculpted with a lot of realistic wrinkles and has a ton of shading. The belt has some slightly uneven lines in paint, but that is only noticeable from really up close.

Atem's necklace is definitely the eyecatcher of all his jewellery, which is quite funny, because the all-important Millennium Puzzle than hangs underneath it, is an item that is very important to the actual plot of the series!

Speaking of the Millenium Puzzle...it definitely looks a lot more detailed than the puzzle Pokaż zawartość spoileraUkryj zawartość spoileraon the other Yami's figure ITEM #91000 . The execution of the Millennium Puzzle is not flawless and although the shading mishaps are minor, they are the biggest painting flaws on this figure. With that said, that is actually a good thing! Especially considering the price this figure was released for: ¥9,000.

The strap holding the Millenium Puzzle is made of PVC, so you can slightly bend it. Although I would not recommend doing this for a longer time.

The bottom part of the dress has nice shading and sculpt, just as the rest of the clothes.

Very interesting that Atem's legs seem to be more muscular than his arms not that I am complaining. His knees have quite a lot of details to them and the shading is nice. His leg bracelets have nice golden shading and details, they are a lot more detailed than his arm pieces.

I really like the loafers Atem wears, as shoes like these are really common to see here. Kotobukiya could have detailed them more, both in shading and sculpt, as they seem so simple compared to the figure and the elaborate base they are standing on.

Speaking about the base, it is nice! It has very nice shading and sculpt and is fitting for the character. Just like almost all other Kotobukiya figures, Atem is screwed into the base and can't be removed. The bottom of the base shows some general copyright markings.

Bonus pictures

The impressive and strong look of this figure, gives you a lot of nice angles for photography!

Swoon...

The Points

Positive
- Kotobukiya definitely stepped up their game and provided a figure in this line with a lot more detail than the previous ones!
- Amazing representation of this character, while a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh! fans wouldn't have dared to have dreamed about this character ever getting a figure!
- All. That. Shimmering. Gold.

Neutral
- Could have had some more detailing in jewellery here and there.
- Tiny paint mishaps.

Negative
- A few strange visible pegs at the jewellery.
- Atem's loafers barely have any details and are missing shading.

The Scores

Sculpting 9/10
The sculpting is amazing with no big errors to point out here. There is still some room for improvement, but the quality of the sculpt of this figure is already a lot better than the other figures from this line.

Painting 8/10
A few mishaps on jewellery and loafers that seem to have been forgotten to be painted, but aside from that, the painting is amazing on all other parts and I think this is the highest amount of shading I have ever seen on a Kotobukiya figure.

Posing 8/10
Powerful and very fitting for the character. The way the cloak is being hold while the other part is being whipped to the back is very unique on a figure.

Base 8/10
Nice base with quite a lot of detail in sculpt and shading.

Packaging 8/10
Nice design packaging fitting the rest of the line.

Enjoyment 10/10
I am completely in love with this figure. As a huge Yu-Gi-Oh! fan that especially loves the Egyptian parts of the series, this figure is just a dream come true. He is not perfect, but the fact that Kotobukiya is making these for quite fair prices, really means I can't complain. I hope to see other Egyptian characters to fill my Yu-Gi-Oh! shelves with. Pokaż zawartość spoileraUkryj zawartość spoileraA Thief Bakura or Priest Seto next please?

Conclusion

Kotobukiya has definitely stepped up their game, as this figure is of a lot higher quality than the other Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters ARTFX J figures released so far. If you're a big fan of (the Egyptian part of) Yu-Gi-Oh! and/or a fan of Atem, you really don't want to skip this figure!

Availability

Atem nowadays fetches a bit more than his original release price of ¥9K. An opened one in good condition pops up for sale quite a lot and goes for around ¥11K-¥12K, he is also worth that price in my opinion.

And to finish it!

Here is how I currently display this figure (until I have unpacked my other Yu-Gi-Oh! figures):

The figures from this line are so amazing for any Yu-Gi-Oh! fan! I sometimes still can't believe they are making these after all these years!

For those who read all this way, thank you! My next review will be about another Yu-Gi-Oh! figure, Kotobukiya's Apple Magician Girl ITEM #358240 .

I'm really considering whether or not to get him now.. at first I didn't plan to but the gold and especially the necklace sure is beautiful and I loved the egyptian story parts a lot back then! your pics really don't help fighting the urge :P

Thanks for liking the pic! :)

Hehe, he is really good! So if he fits the rest of your collection or if you have a good idea on how to display him, I would go for it! :)

ToukoBlack (1 r. temu) #33519381I have this figure. I have the same opinion as you but i think the "rope" that hold's the Puzzle would be nice if it was real and not in pvc. Like in the other figure from Yami Yugi whete its a chain.

Ah, I did not even think of that. Kotobukiya does have multiple figures with actual metal, but I don't think I've ever seen figures from them with real rope or string? (Correct me if I'm wrong though!) That's why I never thought of it. An actual rope would have looked nice, though!

LoveChopper (1 r. temu) #33561998Ya definitely the newer one ^^v especially the beauitful base and the cheerful vibes.
The hair on the whole, especially bothered by the front yellow part. Not a deal breaker though.
Ya, we can only hope for the best.

Yeah the newer one is a lot more in character. :)

Hrmm, I do like the yellow parts around his face (they have nice shading), but I like the 'standing up' yellow parts against the black hair a lot less.

I'll keep an eye on Koto announcements, hoping to see more. :)

Which BMG by Koto? The newer or the older one? And with the hair you mean the shading on the backside?
I'm a bit scared considering there have been no announcements so far in this line for 1+ year, but I hope Kotobukiya will continue with other characters!
Thank you for liking the review! :)

SkyBlue (1 r. temu) #33449949Great review!!! Love how detailed you reviewed him and you really brought out his regal charm especially in that last shot. He turned out great and ah reading your review brought back those lovely memories of watching and playing Yu-Gi-Oh~♡ The final arc was my favourite and I cried so much at the last chapter of the manga. So glad to see you're a huge fan too!ヾ(*´・∀・)ノヾ(・∀・`*)ノ

Ahh, thank you so much for your super nice comment! ^^ The Egyptian arc is my favorite too and yeah the feels at the end!!! I'm also really happy with the last movie! :)

solluxcaptor (1 r. temu) #33440863Really nice review!! So much beautiful detail and pictures, I really appreciate your super in depth review. I have him and can confirm that he is absolutely gorgeous!
Would you believe me if I told you I never looked under the skirt myself?? But now I have to go and see it for myself ahaha

Thank you for liking the review so much! :) Atem really is the gem of the ARTFXJ YGO set so far! <3

And about your last comment...

Aww, really? I thought we were all perverts on this website, haha! I do like how you respected this figure instead of shortly after unboxing checking underneath the skirt like I did. :'D

LoveChopper (1 r. temu) #33444475I love him best along with Dark Magician Girl. Kinda bothered by the hair which look abit fake to me though.
Certainly hope for Priest Seto and Thief Bakura to join him! Hope Kotobukiya will let us expand our collection ^^

Which BMG by Koto? The newer or the older one? And with the hair you mean the shading on the backside?

I'm a bit scared considering there have been no announcements so far in this line for 1+ year, but I hope Kotobukiya will continue with other characters!

Stacycmc (1 r. temu) #33447830Nice review!! I don't watch Yu-Gi-Oh, and typically didn't think much about the anime style either, but I love your shots of these guys...you make me a little more interested in these characters. :D

Thank you for liking the review! :)

Ohhhhhh don't get me started on these characters because I will ramble on and on and on, haha! Especially the characters are so dear to me in this franchise, I love them both in design and personalities. :)

O blogu

Welcome to my figure-blog!

I mostly write reviews for this blog, since I like to read and write those kind of articles the most! I also think of them as very useful for other collectors and Japan enthusiasts!

Next to that, I also write tutorials for GK's, loot blogs, cosplay and convention-related articles and guides for hobby-related subjects...just take a look!

I hope you enjoy my articles and feel free to rate and leave comments! :)
